Shards of Alara

For Reference click here

Shards of Alara is the next block after Eventide is released to finish off Shadowmoor block

Well they have really changed things, Mythic Rares with Red expansion symbols.

New Gold Planeswalker(s).

Basic lands in every pack?

Now packs will have the following distribution: starting with Shards of Alara, every booster pack will have one rare (replaced occasionally by a mythic rare), three uncommons, ten commons, and one basic land. This new rarity distribution will be applied to every core set and expansion (large and small) moving forward.

This is going to cause a shitstorm of commentary on the Wizards boards from people who didn't actually read MaRo's article. Most obvious prediction ever.

I like the changes.

Mythic Rares? Geez, as if $50 rares weren't already an issue.

Within 1 year, I predict a $100 mythic rare.

they are only half the rarity of the current rares. It shouldn't get that bad. never know, though.

From what the article said, they reserve the mythic rare slots for things like Planeswalkers or Legendary creatures, not $50 Tarmogoyfs and $40 Mutavaults

My gut reaction is not to like the mythic rare. at least they are claiming to not just be creating 15 insane cards and throwing them in those slots which is a plus. actually owning all the cards for a competitive t2 deck is getting really expensive.

hopefully with printing less individual cards the math works out to make things less costly on the secondary market.

i would have liked to see the mythic replace the land in the pack though.

are any of these changes going to make me quit magic? no

getting a 15th pick land every pack will suck. i wouldn't have minded a 16th card in the pack as a basic. it wouldn't even have fucked up drafting.

I can't see how Mythic will do anything good for magic. Just the possibility of WoTC fucking up again and making neo-goyf mythic rare scares the shit out of me. There's absolutely no reason to add a new rarity. If anything, it makes the game worse, so how could it possibly be a way to "keep up" with the other TCGs? I guess MTG is only the 1st most popular and successful card game.... what more do they want?

the Shadowmoor block will end with Eventide. Shards will be a new block with three parts. Also, the only thing I don't like is how that planeswalker's staff is covering his name a little. Other than that, mythic rares will make packs feel so rewarding. the land is pretty dumb but, they might change the drafting style.
